Marc

Chagall

Russian, 1887–1985

Marc Chagall was a Jewish painter who was born in Belarus, then part of the Russian Empire. Among the most celebrated painters of the 20th century, he is associated with the modern movements after impressionism, drawing on inspiration from Belarusian folk-life and Biblical themes of his Jewish heritage. He took part in the movements of the Paris art world which preceded World War I and was involved with avant-garde currents at the time. His works abound with colorful, often whimsical, and highly symbolic references to his childhood and faith. He drew richly from both his Russian and Parisian surroundings.
